meditation?
Q. okay, I am trying to connect more with the spiritual world and other things. Meditation is good for this as well as finding inner peace and things like that. Some things I have read told me to meditate for half an hour every day, but every time I try, I end up getting bored long before the half hour is up. I enjoy meditation as it calms me down, but I have a lot of trouble just concentrating on nothing or my breating. Does anyone have any advice for my meditation? Also, does anyone have any tips on astral projection? I've tried but haven't gotten very far with it. Has anyone achieved it and if so, what did you do? Veni, vidi, excessi! Alice

A. The whole aim of meditation is, 1. to calm your mind, and 2. to focus the mind on one thing. If you sit down and close your eyes you will notice that your mind is jumping from one thought to another. Even though you want to concentrate on your breath you will find other thoughts also coming in between. In learning to meditate you must first learn to calm your mind. You do this by following every thought that comes into you mind. You must be like a Manager of a Hotel who stands at the entrance and observes the customers coming in. Without getting attached to the thoughts try to observe them. You will find that a thought comes in and that it goes nowhere and another thought follows it - try following that too - with same results. This way… [cont.]

Q. I understand it can be stressful, but my wife is always so angry when she's on her period. Does meditation help mood swings? I don't mind participating too. I already do yoga.

A. Not a great answer Nitram, and that's not going to help his poor wife is it? Mood related PMS is often difficult to manage. Meditation won't change whats gong on hormonally, but it might help her to relax. She could give it a go. Pilate's and yoga are great options too. I personally find exercise really helps. Also, just by actually understanding what is going on does help. Many people say diet affects PMS, there is little evidence to support this, however some studies do show that caffeine and alcohol can increase mood related symptoms, so she might try and avoid that. The only other thing she might try is vitamin B6, therapeutic doses of B6 can sometimes help PMS, although the evidence supporting it is at best shaky. Some studies… [cont.]

A. As you no doubt know, TM was not only invented but copyrighted and trademarked by Maharshi Mahesh Yogi. There is little doubt that the motivation for doing this is that it can be taught at great monetary profit. It's unfortunate when a potentially useful technique is withheld by a profit motive, but there it is nonetheless. Fortunately some former students of TM have made some of the inner "secrets" and methods available to the public. One excellent source of information is here (though you'll have to comb through the various links to get the whole picture):

How are the mantras in Transcendental Meditation special?
Q. My friend says Transcendental Meditation is the best meditation. What is the mantra and how is it special?
Asked by StarGazer - Wed Apr 29 13:34:38 2009 - - 2 Answers - 3 Comments

A. As part of personal instruction in the TM technique each student receives a suitable mantra or sound which has been selected by their TM teacher as a sound that is harmonious and appropriate for that individual. There is a designated set of mantras that each TM teacher uses to select the appropriate sound for their students. So it is entirely possible that some TM students could have the same mantra as others. It is important to note that TM mantras are specialized sounds that have no menaing. They are the delicate vehicle on which the mind glides to deeper, more subtle levels of thinking. For maximum effectiveness TM students are encouraged to refrain from speaking or writing down their mantra as this has the effect of damaging and… [cont.]

A. Zen meditation and Taoist meditation are different both in intent and technique. The intent of Zen meditation is to put an end to self-centered thinking so that one can focus on genuinely helping others. Another name for this is "enlightenment." The intent of Taoist meditations can vary, but generally has to do with personal qualities of longevity, harmony, or stillness. There are 5 types of mind training used in Zen meditation. This link gives you a description of each type of training: There are many types of mind and body training used in Taoist meditation, including both sitting and moving meditations. Why do meditation Gurus and their followers believe in reincarnation, soul and destiny?
Q. It is scientifically proven that meditation is stress reliever and provider of positive mental state. It helps in concentration in the study and the work. Then even after years of being in regular mediation, why do meditation gurus and their followers believe in reincarnation, soul, destiny based on previous life, etc which are not recognized by science? Cant they still see things as they are?

A. Excellent question! I can only comment from a Buddhist point of view, being that I haven't studied any other forms of meditation. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (a Tibetan Lama who taught in the US in the 1960's) was once asked, "If there is no Self, what is it that gets reborn?" He answered, "Well, I hate to tell you this, but it's mostly your bad habits." (not a direct quote, but close enough) Buddhists tend to view rebirth in two ways -- microcosmic (the moment to moment conditional arising and passing away of all phenomena, including our sense of "I" or "Self") and macrocosimic (being reborn as another being life after life depending on one's previous actions, thoughts and intentions). Not all Buddhists believe in macrocosmic rebirth, and… [cont.]

A. It all depends what one wants to do with meditation. Meditation originates from religious practice, rooted from the Buddhist and Taoist teaching. Here is how I understand it. Secular yoga meditation provides a vehicle to calm down and letting go of some stress, slight increase of body immunity, and some benefit in treating some illness. When the yoga is practiced along with a philosophy, the person shows longevity while the body ages. Religious novice in an Eastern religion, casually observes the rituals, notes what others are doing, treats it as philosophy, and practices meditation. The sophomore rarely reads the scripture. He practices the meditation without full understanding what meditation does from the scripture: how to… [cont.]

A. There is relaxation meditation (not sure the actual name) but it is where you go from muscle to muscle (top to bottom) and relax it until you are completely relaxed mantra: where you repeat a word or phrase to help lull you into a "trance" state breathing: you simply regulate your breathing in a rhythmic way (ie. breathe in for hold release for Music: you listen to a song to block out everything else, usually a mix with the breathing one and there are others that use different chemicals (such as relaxants, hallucinogens...etc)

What are the differences between astral projection and meditation?
Q. I know they are not the same but if one is meditating is it possible that they could astral project if they are deep enough in meditation? I guess it would take years or a lifetime to be able to get to that point. The reason why I'm asking is that I want to learn to meditate but do not wish to astral project. I read the answers posted so far and that is what I thought. The reason why I don't want to astral project is because it is possible to open yourself up to evil presences. I would be interested to know how the experience feels however to those who have tried it. Also do you think it is possible to open yourself to an evil presence while mediatating? A. sorry guys while all your answers are nice and somewhat accurate none of them are 100% correct. astral projecting happens in a state of sleep and it is your soul leaving your physical body, but don't wonder away too far because your connected by a silver cord which is also mentioned in the bible and if the cord breaks which is like an umbilical cord you can not return to your physical body...your dead. and meditation is just a state of relaxation so relaxed you may get sleepy but you don't actually fall asleep.

Asked by JayH - Sat Mar 14 17:44:26 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The most significant thing meditation can do for you is make your life better... and oddly enough, it will be the people around you that start noticing the difference, since it is such a natural change. Instead of having 2 days a week when you feel great, it will be 3... and then after some time if will be 4 and so on. It is a gradual change. A flashy experience may be a quick thrill, but those things do not bring the 24-7 day experience of a better life. You are doing great. Do you know how many people are searching for something that will improve their lives and have not found it? You found it. Stick with it. You are doing better than you know.

A. A deep state of meditation is impossible to describe, it's totally different to normal consciousness, (but not like a drug trip or a dream) it's like someone took away all the stuff that was clouding your mind and you wake up and realize who you are and where you are. It's intensely blissful and purifying as well. But really it's like trying to describe a colour to a blind person- you have to experience it yourself to understand- everything else is just another bunch of words in your head. It's not hard to get into meditation though- try here

How long does it take to see the benefits of meditation?
Q. How long does it take to see the benefits of meditation? I've been meditating for 20 minutes, twice a day, for about a month. I still can't see any positive internal changes. Would living in a abusive/negative environment prevent these changes from occurring? When I meditate I'm usually calm and peaceful, but I don't feel that way during the day. Please provide some insight. Thank you.
Asked by WorldPeace - Wed Jan 20 05:26:11 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is very good you have committed to a daily practice. Now, a little patience is needed. The river of your body-mind-Being is muddy, from years of neglect. It may take a little time for the mud to settle, so that the clear, fresh water is known and tasted. If you are living in an abusive/negative environment now, this will add a bit of challenge to things. As you move through this environment, notice how you respond to each event. Over time, you may find more options available to you than you currently see. If you are talking about a past environment, we all have our histories to deal with. Continue meditating, and all will be revealed and healed in due course.

Why do some claim that meditation opens the mind to demonic influences?
Q. I have seen a few claims here and on other forums that if you meditate or get hypnosis, then the door is open for demons to come in. However, I cannot find a source for this idea. Do you really believe that quieting the mind is dangerous? If so is there a Biblical basis for this? What about our ordinary state of mental chatter? Can a demon really get through to someone who is in meditation that cannot get through when that person is worried about their to-do list, what they are going to have for dinner tonight, etc?
Asked by ralph_5772 - Mon Jul 5 14:19:15 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The belief that a demon can enter your body during meditation is Spiritual Urban Myth. Many who follow a strict religious upbringing have been informed that meditation is something used by pagans, and devil worshipers to bring themselves closer to evil spirits. It is then passed on to congregations through the pastor or other church members that you shouldn't meditate. (Trust me I have had Christians tell me you shouldn't meditate.) It is no easier for a demon to poses your body during meditation than during a normal day. During meditation your body is still fully intact to the spirit. You actually have a tendency to become hypersensitive to normal noise, spirits, and other elements around you. You would notice if something became "off"… [cont.]
